Ilie s.s. Kotomahana, from Sydney, via Hobart and the BlufF, arrived alongside the George street pier at 7 a.m. yesterday. She left Sydney at 10 p.m. on the 15th inst. and arrived at Hobart at 8.30 p.m. on the 17th, leaving again at 4.20 p.m. tm the following day; passed Puysegur Point light at 5.20 a.m. on the 2Lst, breasted Centre Island at 9.18 a.m., and reached the Bluff at 11 a.m., and sailed again at 7.15 p.m. same day, breasted the Nuggets at midnight, and entered Taiaroa Heads at 5.30 a.m. yesterday, having experienced moderate southerly winds tvith beam sea. She steamed up from Port Chalmers yesterday forenoon and landed cargo at the Rattray street wharf. The s.s. Corinna will take in transhipments for the north to-day from the ship Canterbury. The s.s. Invercargill left Dunedin on Monday evening with cargo ex the barque Waimea for Invercargill. The s.s. Wakatipu left the tongue wharf atl p.m. yesterday with passengers and cargo for Sydney, via the East Coast ports. The s.b. Herald was floated out of the graving dock yesterday morning and her place taken up by the Corinna. The barque Annie Fletcher was towed to sea yesterday afternoon and left the Battray .street Wharf for Lyttelton. News has been received at Sydney that the Italian man-of-war Christopher Columbus has started on a cruise round the world. She possesses six big guns and six 6in B.L. guns, and a complement of 234 men all told. His Royal Highness Louis of Savoy, Duke of Abruzzi, is on board as Bn officer, holding the rank of a lieutenant. , The Admiralty have decided to pay the thirdclass cruiser Curasoa out of commission, and she J3 to return to England to be refitted for another term ofractive service. The new torpedo destroyer Boxer was successfully launched by Messrs Thorneycroft in December. She is a sister ship to the Avaunt, and is the fourth of her type constructed and launched by Messrs Thorneycrolit for the Royal Navy. She is 200 ft long and 19ft beam, and will have engines Bnd boilers of the lype fitted to the Daring, her guaranteed speed being 27 knots. The owners of the Strath line have recently added another steamer to their fleet in the shape of the Strathfillau, a sister to that fine steamship Btrathord, now in Port Chalmers. She went on her trial trip from Hartlepool on November 21. The vessel is a sister ship to the Strathnesa, Strathnairn, and Stmhord, and is the fourth steamer built and engined by Slessra William Gray and Co. (Limited) to the order of Messrs Burrell and Sons, of Glasgow. She carries 6400 tons dead weight, and i 3 376 ft 6in in length, with a breadth of 47ft and a depth of 29ft 9in. Her engines are of the triple expansion type, having cylinders 27in, 43in, aud 72in in diameter respectively, with a piston stroke of 45in. Steam is supplied by two large single-ended boilers, working on the forced draught system, patented by Mr Howden, of Glassovr-, the eteam pressure being 1701b per square inch. Tub air fan is in the engine room, and is driven by a separate vertical engine. The trial of the ship and her machinery, which was satisfactory in every way, was witnessed by .Mr George Burrell, one ot the managing owners, »nd Mr Taylor and Mr M'Gechan, superintending engineers to the owners. NOTICES TO MARINERS.

The Wellington Harbour Board has given noho; that works are being carried out for the extension of the Queen's wharf and Jervois quay, Wellington Harbour. The works comprise the extension southward of the middle tee for 75ft. the extenaion southward of the outer tee 120 ft, and the extension northward of the outer tee 105 ft at the Queen's wharf, and works at Jervoia quay tor 220 ft southward of the 40-ton crane. Masters ot vessels should be cautious when approaching tue works. i The Westport Harbour Board has given notice that on and after the ISth instant the colour ot the signal balls shown on the ilagataff-yard will 08 changed from white to black. The board also notifies that on and after the above dute the lower or extreme ends of the half-tide training walla ™ the south-east aide of the river will be marked hy one white light on each wall, sitimted above :i"rt below the mouth of the lasoon respectively. Ins short training wall on the north-east side of the river opposite the mouth nf the lagoon will be marked by a white luht placed on its extreme end.
