ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

At the inquest on Peake, the saloon passenger who died on the Monowai, the verdict >7a» to the effect that deceased died from chloroclyne poisoning, but there was no evidence to show whether the dosa was taken to procure sleep or with, the intention of committing suicide. A telegram has been received by Inspector Hickson from Mrs Charles-Peake, of Nelson, requesting that her husband, who died on the Menowai, may ba buried here. Wellington, January 22. A yonng woman named Mary Pridham fell off the train near Taw* Flat viaduct this morning She waß standing on the platform at tha time. She is still uncoasoious but is likely to recover. WAiMATEi January 22. The inquiry into the cause of the death of the man who was found dead on the road at Waihaoon January 12 was concluded to-day before Major Keddell, coroner. The verdicb of the jury was: "That deceased died from injuries received by violence from some person or persons unknown." A rider was added passing grave censure on the inhuman conduct of Jeremiah M'Carthy in allowing tha deoeased to lie in his apparant helpless condition without giving information to the poliea or assisting him in £ot?b other way. Immediately the inquiry wan concluded tho detectives proceeded to Waihao and arrested M'Carthy, who was lodged in the lockup here this evening. A man named Wm. John Smith, a labourer, residing in Cliristchuroh, was knooked down yesterday at Selwjn crossing by the express train to Dunedin from tbe north, and was very much cut about the head, but did not lose consciousness. Two doctors who were on tho train attended to him and he was carried on to AshburtOn, where he was taken to the hospital. Ha is a little deaf, and may nob have heard the approach of the train, which was going about 23 miles an hour at the time. The man was on his way to the harvesting fields
