TRAMWAYS IN ROSLYN.

At Friday's meeting of the Roslyn Council the following lettsr wan read from the Roalyu Tramway Company :— She Town Cleric, Roslyu. Dear Sir, —1 am directed to acknowledge receipt Df your memo, of 21st ult. I'irst, as to the extension along High street, I bow send you plan showing the proposed Una and longitudinal section. It is intended to run tho curs on this line only D 3 far as Bishopscourt at preseat by horse power, but the line i 8 to be laid off in such a way that it may bo made use of for haulage by electric power, and when that is applied run right the whole length of the line. Looplines or sidings will, of course, be laid where necessary, and it might probably be better to build the line upon the west instead of the east Bide of the street. It is ehown upon the east side en the plan This, however, is a detail which we should wish that you, as borough clerk, should in the ordinary way be authorised to discuss and arrange with us. Will your council be good enough to direct you, es borough inspector or surveyor, to approve of the plans in the ordinary way, to that the work may be gone on with at once. The company have tenders for supply of sleepers and rails, and are anxious to proceed without delay, hoping, as stated in ruy former letter, to catch the summer traffic. Further, as the extension to Kaikorai Valley, the company have had the levels taken End their plan prepared showing route and longitudinal section of the proposed line. I send the plan herewith for the information of your council. It -will be within the knowledge of your council that a good many mouths since this company entered into communication with tho City Council of Dunedin with reference to certain ixtessions of line and other matters. The company's scheme in opening up these negotiations was to run all the extension lines by electricity, and to take the line down the valley by the same motive power. In furtherance of this project, tha company communicated with the qualified authorities in Ameiica with raference to grades workable by this means of transit, and for other necessary particulars. By recent mail thu company have received to hand some of Ihe naeded information, and some has yet to come. The company are still iv communication as to further details, and your council will readily perceive that the company could not until all the information is at hand safely say, in answer to your memorandum, the exact djite at whioh it would be proposed to complete this extension of the lint to the Kaikorai Valley. The intention of the company wag not to have approached your council with reference to this particular portion of extension until all was in jeadiness for a start (as it involved introducing a method of haulage new to this colony, and therefore should be complete as to details before commencing construction), but as there seems to be Boms misconception as to the company's intentions, I am now directed to make this explanation, i rum waich you will observe that this was part of the company's proposed scheme many months ago. If your council would prefer that the question of conceding to .'anyone the right of constructing a tramway on the road to Kaikorai Valley Ehould staod over until we receive the information we are now getting from America, we sball be Batisfiad. But we wbh the right kept open to us to go down that road, as it is, as has already been stated, an extension we have intended to make when funds should bfe available, and the inducement of traffic and method of haulage should be found to te favourable and suitable. The High street extension, however, being workable for the present by horse haulage, wili go ahead forthwith, and be completed in a very few weeks after the work is started. —I have, *c, \V. 0. Mr Hay, the engineer, was later in returning from Melbourne than was anticipated, and as nothing could be doDe till his report had been considered, the promoters regret that the time bas been too short for them to submit more details of the scheme. I may say, however, that the promoters consider that their calculations warrant the statement of fares mentioned in the prospectus. I have now to aak the council to apply for an Drder authorising the construction of a tram line as shown on the plan above referred to by a firm line, and also by the dotted lines denoting proposed extensions so far as they lie respectively within the borough.—l am, &c, A. J. Park. It was resolved to request Mr Park to forward plans and specifications of the proposed tram line in accordance with the provisions of "The Tramways Act 1894." Mr J. A. Millar forwarded a resolution passed at a meeting of the ratepayers held to discuss the question of a new .tram line, from town to the Kaikorai Valley, the letter being received. NEW ZEALAND COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS AND WAREHOUSEMEN'S ASSOCIATION. o The annual meeting of the New Zealand Sommercisl Travellers and Warehousemen's Association was held at the association's rooms in Moray place on Friday. Mr Robert Wilson presided, and there were 24 members present. ANNUAL BEPOBT. The annual report (which has already been published) and balance sheet were taken as read. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report aad balance sheet, said hs hod been, asked to take the chair in the unavoidable absence of Mr James Wilson, the president, who wag out of town. It must be a great pleasure to all those connected with the association that they had such an admirable result for the year's transactions, which showed an increase of £300 in the funds of the association. When it was proposed to initiate the club rooms he opposed the matter, but he waa glad to ccc that they had proved very successful. The club was very well supported, admirably kept, and conducted in s, splendid manner. He referred specially to tha satisfactory arrangement which the committee had made with the Union Steam Ship Company in regard to special allowances and tares to commercial travellers, and pointed out that before commercial travellers could avail themselves of these privileges they would require to present their tickets of membership. He also alluded to the many advantages of being connected with the association, and said that the concession granted by the U.S.S. Company to members of the association was not one of the least of those advantages. He further spoke feelingly of the dentil of one of the trustees of the association, Mr W. Secular, who was lost in the ill-fated Wairarapa, and referred to the loss that the association had sustained by his death. He regretted that' he would sot be able to be present at the annual dinner, but he hoped that members who could possibly attend would roll up and make it the ÜBnal snecess. Mr Hume seconded the motion, .which was carried unanimously. Mr Hume moved—" That clause X be altered to read that' the secretary shall collect and receive,' &c, instead of 'receive '[only." \ Mr Caeteb seconded the motion, which waa carried. ' Mr James Beown moved—" That rule XXIX ba altered to read ' 14- days'' notice instead of * 30 days,' and that an addition be made to said rule that no notice of alteration of any role be considered unless firat approved by the Committee of Management of the association for tue time being." Mr Solomon moved—" That it be a recommendation to the iucoming committee to take ioto consideration the advisability of securing more commodious premises for the association."
