THE ELECTRIC LIGHT.

Three business premises in George street— namely, those of Messrs Duthie Bros., drapers and clothiers, Mr J. M'Donald, tailor, and Mr S. R. Stedman, bicycle importer and manufacturer—are now supplied with the electric light, and were on Saturday evening illuminated wholly by electricity. The shop 3 were well lighted throughout; the light was perfectly steady, and showed off the Christmas display of goods to great advantage. The tflare which was so objectionable in the net? light; when first introduced has been diminished, and it is now soft and not trying to tha eyes. It also possesses the great advantage of leaving the air nncontaminated and cool, an advantage which cannot be easily overestimated. Besides the very palpable result of leaving the premises more comfortable and healthy, there will be the absence of unfavourable effects caused by gas upon the finer classes of goods. As it is estimated the cost of electricity will prove less thau that of gas, the change, in the event of this being so, will prove in all respects beneficial. Messrs Duthia Bros, have 30 100 volts 18-candla power and four 100 volts 32-candle power lamps, and there would have been more of the lamps of the higher power, but for tha fact that the supply in hand was not sufficient. Mr M'Donald's small shop is well illuminated with six electric lamps, and Mr Stedman'a with eight. The work in connection with the installation of the light in all the premises has been carried out under the direction of Mr D. R. W. Ovendon, an electrical engineer in tha employ of Mr Stedman; and has proved thoroughly successful and satisfactory. Tha lighting power is supplied from a dynamo in Mr Stiedman's factory at the rear of his shop. It is a 100 velts 30 ampere machine of tha Gcdcher type, driven by a new and improved Marshall steam engins, which is fitted with a crank Bhaft governor specially designed for electric light installations, and works admirably,; Even when a connection with other machinery, was made, there was not the least flicker observable in the light. The v dynamo makes 1260 revolutions per minute, and the trial on Saturday evening proved the efficiency, of the plant and the capacity of those who have undertaken its erection and management.
