THE MAYORAL ELECTIONS. THE CITY.

The retiring mayor (Mr H. S. Fish) and Mr Mr W. Dawson were the candidates, and throughout the contest both were confident of success, though during tho afternoon some of Mr Dawson's supporters expressed the opinion that Mr Fish would be returned, as his supporters had turned up in greater numbers than was expected. So far ao can be discovered there was really no block Toting. Mr Dawson did not get the unanimous rapport of the liquor trade, and he did receive the votes of some of the Temperance party, who, on personal gronnds, considered him the more desirable candidate, though the Temperance party as such took no intsrest in the electien. Ice constitution of the respective committees showed also that what has been regarded »o the Labour party w&s divided ; and it waa in other ways evident that though Mr Fish had lost a number of his old supporters, not a few of his old opponents took no active part against him in tho contest. The number of voters on tho roll is now some 2560, of whom from 400 to 500 are absent from Dunedin, and there voted 1605; so that the polling was in the same ratio as last year, when a total of 1816 votes were recorded, and there were some 200 additional names on the burgess roll. It is somewhat singular that Mr Daweon this year should have polled within two of the number of votes given to Mr C. B. Chapman, Mr Finh'e opponent last year. At last election his Worship polled 214 votes more than were cast in his favour yesterday. At half-past 6 some four or five hundred people had assembled in front of the Town Hall to learn the result of the poll, which was declared by the returning officer to be as follows: — Mr 3. S. Fish 853 Mr Wm. Dawson 747 Majority for Mr Fish ... 106 Informal, 5. ROSLYN. The result of the polling for the position of Bisyor-of Roslyn was as follows: — , Louis Kemnitz 265 Alex. Matheson 177 Majority for Mr Ketnnitz, 88. NORTH-BAST VALLEY. The polling for the election of a mayor o£ North-East Valley resulted in the return of Mr Arthur by a majority of 85. There were two informal votes. The following in the number of votes polled for each candidate:—John Arthur ... 196 J. B. White ... 11l GREEN ISLAND. Wellington.—The result of the polling for . the mayoral election was as follows:—C. M. Luke, 786; A. Brandon, 676; L. L. Harris, 201. The result was rather a surprise, as the sitting mayor, Mr Brandon, w»9 expected to win, though his supporters wers a little afraid that, aa the polling showed, Cr Harris might split the votes sufficiently to let a third man in. Mr Luke is a well-known ironfonnder in town. Ec has not had any previous experience in municipal affairs. Mastebton. —Great interest was taken in the mayoral election. Mr G.
