TAILINGS ELEVATORS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sin,—-In your issua of Thursday last yon give a report of a trial held in Mr J. Sparrow's yard of a new machine for elevating fcailinga from the stern of a dredge, and from your description it would appear that this was the first of the kind that had baen constructed. Permit me to aay that "the Enterprise dredge" at Alexandra has been working for the past two I months with an elevator, and I understand that this one is the first of the kind that has been constructed and adapted to elevate tailings mechanically from a dredge. This elevator waa designed by Mr W. H. Cutten, under whose supervision it waa constructed and erected. It works remarkably well, and every credit is due to Mr Cntten for his ingenuity and skill in inventing so valuable an adjunct to our dreclging machinery. It raises the tailings trom the stern of the dredge after the gold has been washed out and stacks them to a height or l^tC or 15ft abovs the water level, thus allowing the higher river banks to be operated on, which has been considered impossible hitherto. I would suggest to the Waipori dredging companies to take advautage of this means of disposing of their tailings. It might get over their difficulties and enable them to resume work. —I am, &c, Dunedin, December 21. C. S. Reeves.
