The Public Works. Committee recommends that Cr Dawson ba appointed chairman of the committee for the ensuing 12 months. Tbe city sur-' veyor has been instructed to act regarding the condition of tbe roadway approaches to the railway overbri-ge, as requested by the railway engineer ; to erect a trough at the corner of Stuart and Smith streets, as requested by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and by. Mr A. Browning and 94 others. The following applications have been granted:—Tbe Maori Hill Council for permission to form about one and a-half chains of footpath at, the head ofCosey Dell on the Town Belt, the borough council giving an undertaking to maintain the path and relieve the city from any liability in respect of any accident that might arise therefrom ; the North-Eist Valley Council for a contribution of half cost, which is limited to £5 in all,"of repairs to the road between tho tram terminus and the Pine Hill road, this being consented to without prejudice. Several applications made under this modification of the building regulations were dealt witb by the committee, subject to the assent of the council.

The Water Committee recommends that Cr Carroll be. appointed chairman of the Water Committee for the ensuing year. With reference to Messrs A. Thomson and Co.'s application for a domestic supply to their factory, Crawford struct, the committee recommends that in lieu thereof an annual allowance of E!.,1.00gal off their account be made;-that the application of Mr F. J. Sullivan, Stuart street, for a free supply of water to his fishcuring establishment be declined, but that a small allowance be made for domestic supply where the annual consumption is known; that a service pipe be laid to the building line of Messrs Morrow;' Bassett, aud Co.'s premises, Cumberland street, provided they paid half the coat of such serviceviz.;£4 W-. -,- r .-.-.::'•• J

Applications to store explosives were granted in some 70 instances. Baths and Sanitary.'— The committee recommends that with reference to Mr C. S Reeves's suggestion as to' tbe value of coal dust as a deodoriser that consideration of the matter be deferred till the question of the drainage system was settled.

Fire Brigade. —)The committea reports with reference to Mr D. C. Cameron's application for a license for the City Ball that, after visiting the place, the license was granted, providing that, certain alterations to the dre«s circle entrance be carried out.,

Tramways and Vehicles.—The committee reports haying granted 94 drivers' licenses. The Finance Committee recommends that the mayor be appointed chairman for the ensuing year. The committee reports having despatched Mr EW. Wilson to Christchurch ,in order that he might be present at and: superintend the preparation of the loan conversion debentures by Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs (Limited).- This will be effected by the 20th inst.
