THE LOWER HARBOUR. TO THE EDITOR.
Sin,—The Harbour Bturd have stated that they will have a channel cut to the depth of 22£ ft at low water, by dredge 222, within a certain time. The board must know that such a statement is tantamount to throwing dust in the eyes of the public, most of whom will see this statement and say, "Oh, the lower harbour difficulty will soon be all right when dredge 222 comes back."
Now the board ought to know from patt experience that if dredge 222 does the work stated in the given time (which, judging from her past performances, is very improbable), by the time she has completed the cut some parts of it will have commenced to shoal np. This constant see-sawing of the dredge across a sandbank is a pure waste of money, and will never result in any permanent good. It has already cost a good deal more thtin would have constructed Mr Barr's training wall, which would have given 23ft at low water from the headß to Port Chalmers. The sooner the public realise the fact that pottering about with the dredge will never do any permanent good, the better for the lower harbour and for the trade of Dunedjn,—J am, &c, May 14, ~ Engineer,
