The quarteriy rettirns for the pefiori ended March 3l (which have been compiled by the secretary ot the Cttago Education Board)' show that there were £02 .schools iU operation in the' district, employing 216 male and 274 ferotle teachers, besides 14 teachers of sewing. Tbe number of pupils on the school rolli at the beginning of the quarter was 21,189 and at the end of tbe quarter 82,754, comprising 11,801 boys and 10,953 girls. The working average for the tjuartef was., S§S2 boja and 9882 girls, making a .total of l£i,2s4—biing an fo&6sß(i.ef 30!? on v th£t for t the .preceding qtfartef.
