DREDGING ON THE CLYDE.

The Glasgow Evening Citizen of a recent date gave some particulars of the dredging work on the, Clyde, with illustrations of the new hopper barges now in use. When the Victoria channel was commenced it was fondly hoped that Dunedin would become a second Glasgow, and under the circumstances some particulars from our contemporary are of interest. Up till 1802 the dredging* were loaded on punts holding eight cubic yard b and deposited on the foreshore, fully 200 punts numbar lately changed hands privately. Buyers are,not to keen to do business at auction, preferring to make their purchases under less exciting Diodes of procedure. A very fair demand oon-

peing uEfed. In that year steam hopper barges were adopted to convey the dredgings to sea. The first of these.had a capacity of 3.0 tons, and was built by .Messrs W.iliiaiu Simons and Co., Renfrew,, af a cost of. £5800. The dic.dgings »«ra deposited in Loch tonj; 23 miles f.rqai Glasgow. The hopper barges had increased in sise and had a capacity of about 500 tons with a speed of ewht knots an hour and costing £59^0 Rach, up till March last year, when the trustees were interdicted from depositing in Loch Lon?, 30,226,383 cubic yards had been discharged. If this had been tipped in Gleorge square it would fill it to a height of about 1140 ft. The cap' am of one of the barges declares that.this immense.ciuantityhas m'ada no difference in the lake.. The soiindinss ho* arb from 84 to 35 fathoms, jiist.as it was 35 years ago; The trust has now authority to depoSit the dredgings three miles S.S.W. of Garroch Head, south end of Bute, five miles from the Arran shore, and 42 miles from Glasgow. The depth here is 47 to 60 fathoms. Larger barges being required six have boon built with ft capacity of JSSfI tons each. The vessels Cost about £15;pi)0 each. They: havb twi3 screws; and. steam at the rate of. iO} knots, per hour, .the coal consumption for the run of 84 miles being 10 tons. The well is divided into two parts, with six doors in each division. The work of opening the hopper doors occupies about one minute, and if the material goes away readily the barge is discharged and starting on its return in five minutc3. Each barge has a captain, a mate, two engineers, two firemen, three seamen, and a cook. During the last financial year tho quantity raised nnd deposited in Loch Long and in. the Firth was not less than 1,841,358 cubic yards, while the cost of dredging atad depositing was about 9d per cubic yard. The fleet engaged in the work of dredging and improving the river and harbour consists of five steam dredgers, one tug,- two diving bells, one floating steam 10-ton digger, 22 hopper barges, and about 200 punts. One of the dredgers—the Cairndhu—named after ex-Lord Provost Ure's pjace-% the most powerful vessel of its kind afloat. , It cost £24,000, and cttn raise 6CO tons per Hour from a depth of 40ft. Several years agg Hr Deas introduced stesim in (lie working of one of the diving bells and supplying air to the diver. Of the trust's fleet over 70 craft of various kinds have been built by Messrs Wm. Simons and Co., Renfrew.
