SHIPPING SUMMARY.

! This summary represents shippiug events of the period commencing September 4 and ending October 1, both dates inclusive. :— STATISTICAL, FOHEION," ETC. Shipping matters have been unusually dull during the greater part of the month, although ab the time we write they have assumed a brighter aspecb; indeed for some considerable time paßb Dunedin has nob had so many vessels ab her wharves as I bhere are ab presenb, and a red-lebber day in the hisbory of the upper harbour was certainly September 26, when the cargo steamer Otaramal Captain F. Canese; from London, steadied inbo porb, J and, after a short delay at Port' Chalmers, caused by her having to tranship some 1? tons of combustibles,; proceeded up the channel, and was berthed at the Victoria wharf to discharge cargo, of which she brought some 3000 bons for Dunedin and about 2000 tons for northern ports. She is the largest vessel which has landed cargo direct from London ab our wharves, and in fubure we iriay confidently expect all vessels .of her class bo land their cargoes in the city instead of, as heretofore, discharging in the lo;wer harbour. This will be a boon for which consignees will; no doubt be grateful. !'"' . During the month the total number. of vessels of all classes which have arrived at the Porb of Otago his been 41, with a total of 39,104 tons; while the . departures have amounted to 35 vessels, representing 29,932 tons register. Last month the arrivals were 44 vessels with 50,288 tons, and the departures 42 vessels, representing, a total of 52,953 tons. During the monttiljthe arrivals .from oversea ports have been S/.vessels, with a total of 6737 tonsj as againsb:s vessels last month, with a bobal of 17,132; tons. \]. There have been no. departures this month for oversea. The first arrival this month was that of the barquentine Ysabel, of 150 bons, Captain Ross," wibh a cargo of guano from the South Sea Islands. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's ship Crusader, of 1058 tons, Captain Fullarton, from London, with '•■- a full general cargo for Dunedin and Bluff Harbour, arrived here on September 22; and ,was followed on the 23rd by the same company's ship Pleione, 1116 tons, Captain Sargent, with 2000 tons of cargo from: GlaSgOW. :•'■' ; ;' The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamship Otarama, of 3808 tons, Captain F. Canese, with 5000 tons of general cargo from London, arrived on September 26, and the list, was completed on the 27th by the arrival of the barque Dunard;1 of 705 tons, Captain Robertson, with 600 bpns of cargo, from Liverpool, via Wellington. After discharging it, she loads grain here fora :Home port.. INTERCOLONIAL." Our trade with the Australasian colonies has maintained its usual average at this season of the year. The arrivals this month have been 10 vessels, wibh a total of 12,901-tons; and the. departures 7 vessels,'representing 13,175 tons.
