Mr Price advanced him 10s, and subsequently gave him ss. It turned out that he had no authority from his mother to get this money. He had stated that she was stopping with a Mrs Hett. There were two ladies of that name, "but they both denied having any knowledge of Mrs Bryant. Mrs Bryant resided at Lawrence, and it was impossible to get her down to attend court that day. He (the Inspector) therefore asked for a remand until Wednesday morning. —Mr O'Reilly made no objection to the remand^ but asked that bail might be fixed.—ln reply to a question as to where accused stayed, Inspector Pardy said he had been living with the Chinese, and had got into the habit of smoking opium. He thought this was what had got him into the trouble.—The case was adjourned to Wednesday, bail being allowed—accused in the sum of £5 and one surety of £5.

He al3o tried to force a poisonous liquid down his wife's throat. The poison used was iodine, which he had got from the hospital to dress his arm with. The Inspector asked for a remand to the following morning in order that accused might be examined medically, as he scarcely thought that he could be in his right mind. If the adjournment were ■ granted he could be examined by the gaol surgeon.—The Bench considered that the adjournment was only fair to the man himself, and granted it till the following morning. . .-■■;
