A FIFTY-MILE BICYCLE RACE.
, ■ ■ Melbourne, October 2 The intercolonial 50-mile bicycle race on Saturday was won by Turner (of the Melbourne Club) by 19 seconds. There were 33 starters, of whom 12 finished. During the race Herman (of JBendigo) collided with a cart and fell, receiving severe injuries.
A Melbourne cablegram states thai the tracks are_ in splendid order, despite the heavy rain which fell. Light Artillery appeared yesterday morning, but it is doubtful whether he will ccc the starting post for the Derby. A number of firms intimate that their starting price betting limits have been increased to £15 in this colony and to £20 on Australian events. Mr John Reid's (Elderslie) three-year-old filly by Tranter from Goodbje, which arrived at Mtddlepark recently on a vuifc to Apremont, was found dead fa one of.the paddocks on Thursday m6rning. Information has been received at Wellington that Loyalty is first favourite for the Melbourne Cup,_and has been backed at 10 to 1. Mr O'Brien has expressed the intention of going to Melbourne with him. He was offered £2000 but asks £4000 for the colt.
A Wellington telegram says that the New Zealand Rugby Union are holding a meeting to discuss the question of Australasian union, in view of the secretary being about to visit Sydney.
