A number of small grazing runs in tho Otago district were opaned for selection to intending settlers at the Dunedin Land Office on Monday, no less than 291 applications being received for the land. The leases of 4-5 runs, containing an area of about 54-,ooo' acres, wers originally announced as open for salection, but eight subdivisions of run 225, HighQeld, were withdra\m, leaving 37 runs, having an area of about 42,000 acres, to be disposed of. Out of this number 28 lots were applied for, and competition in most cases was very keen, over 60 applications being received for two separata runs. The total area of land applied for was about 27,500 acres, most of which is contiguous to the Otago Central railway. Tho operation of balloting for the land took place yesterday, Mr I?. A. Cullen conducting the ballot, under the supervision of Mr J. P. Maitland (chief commissioner), and Mr S. B. M'Cdrthy, of Naseby, acting.in the capacity of scrutineer.
