LAND OCCUPATION IN OTAGO.

LARGE DEMAND FOR RURAL SECTIONS.

An unprecedented rash for land has taken - place at the Dunedin Laud offica this week. Borne 87 rural holdings, many pf them beiDg subdivisions of pastoral runs, were opened to intending sett!er3 on Thursday, and no less r than 627 applications were received by the department. Tho land was opened under what is jmown as the optional system, and 35 different lots were applied for. The operation of balloting fci- the land took place yesterday, the ballot being conducted by Mr Callen, under the supervision of Mr J. P. Haitland, chief commissioner, at whose invitation the selectors appointed one of their number, Mr W. 3?. Inder, to act as scrutineer. Out of the 35 successful applicants two desired land for cash, six wanted — occupation leases with the right to purchase, and theremainiog27 had a preference for leases in perpetuity. The total area opened for selection was 23.000 odd acres, about 15,246 acres being taken up. With tbo exception of four of the sections the land all lies on the line of the Otago Centra? railway, and nearly all the applicants are old Battlers in the interior, many of whom havo large families growing up about them. A noticeable thing in connection with the applications is that in some instances six or seven persons in one family have applied for thssame section.
