THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE.

Mr A. Towers, managing director of the Central < Markets Cold Air Stores, reports under date August 12:— Although the arrivals during the past fortnight have not been heavy, the market has continued in a depressed state, and prices of mutton have slowly receded and show a distinct decline as compared with the quotations 14 days ago. It is difficult to trace the necessity tor this decline, and I am not able to say it is warranted either by the stocks on hand or the state of trade. On tho contrary, I think the holders of mutton have not studied the interests of the colonial trade by forced sales, and I am sure senders of mutton will not be satisfied with their present returns. When prices rule so low at this season of the year, in view of further arrivals, it is not safe to look fora revival of values in the near future. The present quotations per 81b are :—Mutton : New Zealand—Best Canterbury, 2s 6d to 2s Sd ; medium and good grades, 2s 3d to 2s 4d; Syduey and Queensland sheep, Is Sd to Is 9d. Lamb : New Zealand—Best Canterbury, 3s lOd. Beef: New Zealand—Hindquarters (prime) 2s 2d to 2s 4d, forequarters (prime) Is 8d to Is lOd; Queensland—hindquarters 2s to 2s Id, forequarters Is Sd.
