THE PORT CHALMERS FIRE BRIGADE.
The sixteenth anniversary of the Port Chalmers lure Brigade was celebrated on Wednesday by a smoke concert at the Provincial Hotel. Amongst the visitors present were his Worship the Mayor (Mr E. G. Allen), Councillors Murray Fail Mitchell, Perry, Invcrarity, Pale, and C. de L. Graham, Captains Price (South Dunedin), Washer (Hoslyn), Petty-officer Pacey (Torpedo Corps), Sergeant Neill (police), Foreman Nicholl (Dunectm .brigade), with representatives of the Railw.iy Brigade and" Salvage Corps, Messrs J. Mill, V. A. Do Maus, and others. An excellent spread was provided, and after justice had been done to it Captain Leech proposed the usual loyal and patriotic toasts. "The Army, Navy, and Volunteers was responded to by Petty-officer Pacey and Gunner Mitchell (L Battery). Captain Leech proposed "The Mayor and Corporation of Port Chalmers," to which his Worship the Mayor, Crs Murray, Fail, and Graham responded. The toast of ' The Local Shipping Interests" was enthusiastically honoured, and ably replied to byMrJ. Mill. In proposing prosperity to the brigade, his Worship the Mayor expressed his satisfaction and that of his council at the amicable relations which existed between thorn and the brigade He congratulated Captain Leech on his appointment as chief of the brigade, and expressed his unqualified satisfaction at the perfect order in which the men kept the station and equipments. He concluded by wishing them a successful year' Captains Price and Washer responded for "The Suburban Brigades." The other toasts were "The United Fire Brigades' Association," " Lifo Honorary Members," "The Ladies," "The Police," and "The Press." During the evening Mr Beath played several excellent violin solos Mr J. I'raser was pianist, and songs were contributed by Captain Washer, Messrs Middleton Dc Maus, Carroll, Dyer, Pacey, M'Tanney. and Beata. Apologies were received from Mr J Mills, M.H.Ji., Captain Cameron, Drs Drysdalc and Ciinninghamo, Messrs J. Morgan and .1 Cable, each of whom forwarded a cheque for 21s Apologies were also read from Captains \V Ihomson (Lloyd's surveyor), Falconer (Torpedo Corps), Waters (L Battery), and Thomson (Port Chalmers Naval Artillery). A most enjoyable evening was spent, and the party broke up at an early hour.
