UNIVERSITY DEBATING SOCIETY.

The fortnightly meeting of the Otago University Debating Society was held on Friday evening ; Mr J. S. Tcunant, 8.A., B.Sc, in the chair. At the Chairman's request the meeting passed a resolution congratulating Professor Parker on his attaining the London Doctorate of Science. A somewhat lengthy programme was provided, but three or four items wero omitted owing to non-attendance of the performers. A pianoforte duet was rendered by the Misses Baron, and a song by Miss Baxter. Then followed an essay by Professor Salmond on the " German Universities." In an able paper the essayist traced the gradual increase of German influence over modern thought. The essayist's own experiences at Berlin University were briefly dealt with. Points of contrast between the 1 German and British universities were emphaBised. The latter correspond, according to Dr Salmond, only to the German gymnasia, the German universities being reserved for graduates. The atmosphere of fearless research in all subjects save politics was contrasted with the political freedom and theological servitude of some Scotch universities. Four points in , German university life the essayist emphasised ' iv conclusion. These were : (1) An intense mii telkctual enthusiasm; (2) the complete hush '■ iv the class rooms ; (3) the sociability of the ■ students; (4) the general poverty of students. 1 The last point, said the essayist, despite its heroic presentment, did not lack a tragic back- ■ ground. On the motion of Mr T. H. M'Kenzie, M.A., a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the essayist. A pianoforte solo by Mr Siedeberg brought the meeting to a close.
