■^TTTATBItBUIIY CONUNDRUMS. In reply to our advertisement calling for Conundrums, Acrostics, &c. for our Golden Waterbury Competition, we received some hundreds oC communications, nil possessing more or less merit—chiefly less. In weeding out the latter we purpose giving each contributor a meed of publicity, and having thus disposed of the least meritorious wo shall publish a score of tho best in the chief newspapers of the colony, and invite the public to nominate the winning Conundrum by a postcard ballot. J)ue notice will be given, and tho prize Rent to and acknowledged by tho author selected by the public A, W., lenther merchant, Auckland, Bends us:— " Why is a Watorbury Watch like the sun ? " Answer: " Becausp it keeps tho best of time." A neat answer, and in nowiso discreditable to tho watch or the sun. There are half a dozen other points of resemblance whioh our contributor overlooks : Both aro universal, both in tho ascendant, neither over sets, both indispensable, both reliable, both supreme in their respective orbits, The sun is the centre of the solar system, lesser planots revolving round it), just as. other wfttehes rovolvo round tho Watorbury, p| OLIT 10 A h CONTRASTS, The Hon. Jons Bauaxcb, Sir Hahhy AtkiKsok. Sin JtfLlus Vogel. Opinions on political matters are legion— everybody has an opinion of some sort. Some think that Ballance and his party aro the willing instruments of the evil one; others think them the only men capable of ushering in that era of unexampled prosperity termed by some enthusiasts the Working Men's Millennium; others, again, are loud in their praises of tho author of the Public Works Policy, whilst others clamour for Sir Harry Atkinson; but one and all are unanimous in pronouncing Buchanan's House of Commons Whisky "the Purest and Best in the market."

THE season for planting spring flowering bulbs having now arrived, I take an early opportunity of reminding my patrons of the fact that early autumn planting is imperative for a brilliant display of these harbingers of spring. Usually planting is delayed until winter, when the soil is cold and wet. thus giving the bulbs little or no chance to make the amount of roots necessary to produce robust flowers. Those who saw my spring bulbs when in bloom last season were amazed at the luxuriant growth and the strength of the flowers, especially growing in such an exposed position as they were, unprotected from the severe south-west gales so prevalent in spring. Success was principally due to early autumn planting and discarding such varieties as were found to produce poor flowers or foliage. My immense collection (the largest in the colony) were never harvested in belter condition, and my customers can rely that none but strong, healthy bulbs will be supplied. — George Matthews, Bulb Grower, Moray place and Mornington.

Holloway's Pills and Ointment.—The combined ill effects of overcrowding, sedentary occupations, and monotony of life are- only too well known to those who have to pass the best part of their lives labouring in factories and crowded workrooms. The compulsory confinement weakens the general health and induces chronic constipation, indigestion, and various forms of skin diseases. Holloway's remedies are of priceless value to persons of this class, for they can be used without entailing loss of work, being purely vegetable in their composition, anil consequently act without harshness on the most delicate system. The experience of more than 50 years proves that no means surpass Holloway's remedies for curing bad legs, bad breasts, piles, and wounds of all kinds. 52 For Biliousness or Sick Headache, Giddiness, Depression of Spirits, Sluggish Liver, Vomiting, .Sourness of the Stomach, Constipation and its evils, Impure Blood, Skin Eruptions, Sea Sickness, etc., ENO'S FRUIT SALT is the simplest and best remedy yet introduced. It removes, by a natural means, effete matter or poison from the blood, thereby preventing and curing Fevers, Feverish Skins, and counteracts any errors of Eating and Drinking, or any sudden affliction or mental strain, and prevents Diarrhoea. It is a pleasant beverage, which supplies the want of ripe fruit, may be taken as an invigorating and cooling draught under any circumstances, from infancy to old age, and may be continued for any length of time, and looked upon as being a simple product of fruit. By its use many disastrous results may be entirely prevented. In the nursery it is beyond praise. Caution —Examine each bottle and see that the Capsule is marked " Eno's Fruit Salt." Without it you have been imposed on by a worthless imitation. Sold by all Chemists. Directions in Sixteen Languages how to Prevent Disease. Prepared only at Eno's Fruit Salt Works, Hatcham, London, S.E., by J. C. Eno's Patent.—[Advt.]
