COST OF THE INSTITUTION. The Chairman said that the cost of the institution for the month of February was L 227 Ss, and the average number of inmates was 221, showing that the cost per head per week was 4s llgd. EMPLOYMENT 01' INMATES. The Chairman said in respect of the employment of old men inmates at the institution he had received the following letter from Mr Mcc on the matter: —"I am in receipt of yours re employment of inmates in cultivating back ground. I may state there are none of the unemployed cajiable of doing such. work. He cards : I will see tlie trustees' wishes are carried out, and no game will be played during working hours. All inmates who are able work four hours per day, either in wards or outside. If the trustees consider the hours too short I will be happy in making them work longer. If the trustees wish the back ground dug, I will try what I can do with those already employed at such work. A large number of inmates are so debilitated they are not able to attend to their own necessary wants. I have always made it a point to see that those who are able are kept employed as far as circumstances will permit, and will give effect to the trustees' wishes as far as lies in my power." Mr Chisiiolm said that evidently a misunderstanding had arisen about the matter. What he objected to was so many men inside the greater part of the day, when for their own good they should be compelled to go out and get as much fresh air and sunshine as possible. At an institution in Birmingham he visited he did not notice so many men about inside as were to be seen at the institution here. The matter was referred to the chairman: TENDERS.
