BOWLING TOURNAMENT.

The improvement in the weather yesterday enabled considerable progress to be made in the annual bowling tournament under the auspices of the NewJZealand Bowling Association, the second and third ties of the rink matches being completed, though at the cost of considerable inconvenience to the players, who, immediately on the last matches-in the second ties being announced, had to hurry down to Watson's Hotel, where the draw.for the third ties were declared, and those who were fortunate enough to remain in the struggle were then bustled straight away to the Dunedin or Roslyn green, as the case might, be, to proceed with the round, which was not finished till -after 7 p.m. Considering the amount of rain that had fallen all the greens were in a surprisingly good condition, though of course somewhat heavy, and they improved as the day wore on. In the second ties eight of the. matches were played on the Dunedin green, one of which produced a very even and exciting tussle. .This was the encounter between Martin's Oamaru rink and the Taieri rink skipped by D. Mackie. In this match the scores were equal at the thirteenth end, each rink having then scored 11 points. The Oamaru players then obtained a lead, and at the eighteenth end had an advantage of six, the score being 18 to 12. In the next three heads, however, Mackie's team succeeded in equalising matters, the score being 18 all at the twenty-first end. An extra end had to be played, and in this the Oamaru rink lay one, thus winning. Another Taieri rink (Christie's) was put out by a, small majority, and Moore's Milton rink obtained a narrow majority over their opponents, but the other matches on the Dunedin green produced unequal contests, the most uneven being the one in which Carlton's Roslyn rink met Toomer's Canterbury one, the former, whose chances for the trophies are much fancied, winning by 35 points to 8. A bigger score was put up, however, on the Kaituna green, where Waiters' Green Island rink obtained 36 points against 10 made by Hale's Canterbury one. In the contest between Kaitangata and Dalgleish's Phoenix team there was some queer play. The latter went off with a lead, scoring 19 to their opponents' 9 in the first sixteen heads, but they did not score at all in the last five ends, and eventually won by 3 only. The most extraordinary game of the day, however, was that—played also at Kaituna^between Sinclair's Dunedin and Matheson's Roslyn rink. In the first seven heads the former scored 11 points, while the latter did not get a single bowl in.' The next seven heads produced almost a contrary result, for while the Dunedin did not add at all to their score the Roslyn obtained 10 points. In the fifteenth end Sinclair's rink lay four, but in the remaining six ends they failed to increase their score, while Roslyn added 11, and thus won by 6 points. At Roslyn the principal interest attached to the contest between Capstick's Caledonian rink and J. Thomson's Dunedin team, the former winning by 20 points to 18, six of the latter's score being obtained in the last three ends.

In the third ties there were a couple of exciting games on the Dunedin green. One of these was the match between Thomson's Christchurch rink and the Kaituna rink skipped by Mitchell. At the twentieth head the scores were 16 all, but the next was a " burnt head " Thomson with a fine drive sending the "jack" into the middle of the green, where another match was being played. This, as it happened, gained the match for his rink, for the Kaituna rink was lying two at the time, and Mitchell had a bowl to place. In the deciding end the Christchurch scored two points, Mitchell missing with his last bowl with which he endeavoured to carry the "jack," to the back. Another exciting- game was the one between Roslyn (Matheson, skip) and Caledonian (Walker, skip). At the 19th end, the Roslyn had an advantage of 2 points— the score being 16 to 14—and were lying three, when Walker, with a fine drive through a narrow part, carried the "jack" to the back where his players' bowls were clustered, with the result that the Caledonians lay six, thus putting them three points to the good. In the remaining couple of ends the Caledonians added two more points and thus had a majority of 5. Watfcers' rink again put up a big score', disposing of their opponents very softly, and Capstick's Caledonian rink and Waddell's Phcenix fell easy victims. The Milton and Phoenix (Dalgleish, skip) had an oven, dingdong game, which the former won by a majority of three points. On the Roslyn green two games were played, and in each singularly enough the winning rink scored 18 and the losing 11 points. Hunter's rink beat Meek's Phcenix, but the other Dunedin rink—skipped by M'Diarmid—were put out. For the fourth ties, the Caledonian'have two rinks leftm, and the Christchurch, Oamaru Green Island, Milton, Dunedin, and Roslyn have one each. There should be an exciting tussle this morning when Hunter's Dunedin.
