CABLE BREVITIES.

Mr Reid, the United States Minister in Paris, is suffering from influenza.

Shares in the Junction Mine, Broken Hill have fallen to 5s 6d.

The German Reichstag has ratified the postal convention arranged in Vienna last year. Thousands of people, including many workmen, daily view the remains of the late Rev. C. H. Spurgeon, now lying in the Tabernacle.

The sleeping carriage of the express train between Bucharest and Braila caught fire, and 18 of the occupants were killed either by fire or in attempting to escape.

Mr J. S. D. Thompson, Canadian Minister of Justice, has gone to Washington to arrange a reciprocity treaty with the United States Government. It is feared that his mission will be fruitless.

Captain Gill, who commanded the. yacht Beagle, has returned to Sydney from Hongkong. He says that Bell and Davis, whom he always knew as Bloom and Douglas, treated him with every consideration. He resigned the command of the vessel after the Honolulu trouble.

I The political situation in Victoria is unchanged. Mr Munro's resignation of the Premiership does not take effect until the negotiations for the disposal of the colony's Treasury bills are completed. Mr Shiels, the Premierelect, is being counselled to exclude the " one-man-one-vote " plank from the platform of the reconstructed Ministry, as it is likely to cause a turmoil at an inopportune time. If Mr Shiels agrees to drop that principle, one of the members of the Ministry in the Legislative Council will retain his seat, but the others will resign along with Mr Munro. It is believed that the Government will retain the single vote as one of the items of their policy, but will keep it in the background as much as possible.

Dr de Joxgh s Light-drown Cod Liver Oil.— In the Wasting Diseases of Children its efficacy is unequalled.—Dr R. C. Croft, author of "Handbook forthe Nursery," writes :—I have tried Dr de Jongh's Light-brown Cod Liver Oil, and find that it contains all the properties which render the Oil so efficacious. Dr de Jongh's Oil is almost a specific in many of the Diseases peculiar to Infancy and Childhood, and I have seen marked benefit produced by its use. Patients prefer it to the Pale Oils, and are able to retain it more comfortably." Sold only in capsuled Imperial Halfpints, Pints, and Quarts, by all chemists. Sole Consignees, Ansar, Harford, and Co., 210 High Holborn, London. ■ jhs
