HARBOUR BOARD CHARGES. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —I soo by your report of tho Harbour Board's l<ist meeting that the secretary read a memorandum re dues on transhipments at this port and at Lyttelton, -which would lead one to think that there is a small difference in the rates for wo»l and skins in favour of Lyttelton, hut that tallow and other produce have a slight advantage at this port. Now, this is far from being the true state of matters. Tho rates quoted for Lyttelton include railway haulage, which must either be taken off to arrive at the actual dues, or added to Dunedin dues quoted to get a true comparison. The matter of haulage applies equally at both ports in actual practice. This was pointed out to Mr Gillies beforo his memo, was read to the Harbour Board, but why he omitted to mention it I cannot say. Notwithstanding Mr Gillies' comforting assurance to the board "that dues have not had any appreciable effect upon the trade of the port in regard to transhipments," I am satisfied I that quite the contrary is tho case. I have been at some trouble in making up the enclosed comparative returns of the actual charges (not dues merely) on transhipments at Lyttelton and at our own port. You may rely on that return as being practically correct, and, as you have published Mr Gillies' figures, I have to ask that you be good enough to publish mine for general information.—l am, &c, Dunedin, February 3. Keith Ramsay.
