» A_ LWAYS AHEAD. " Second-hand Machines Auctioned. ; On Saturday next, 6th inst., at 12 o'clock, i Messrs Stronach Bros, and Morris will sell by ; auction in our implement yards, Bond and Crawford streets, tho following second-hand \ machines:— 1 Buckeye Lowdown, '88 pattern overhauled i. 1 do do '88 do as received ; £ do do '87 do overhauled Ijy c'° do '87 do as received 1 do Elevator '87 do overhauled 1 do do '89 do overhauled 1 do do '89 do asreceived. This sale will afford a capital opportunity for small croppers to secure efficient machines at reasonable prices. Those marked "overhauled " aro guaranteed in good working order, and equal to several seasons' work with reasonable care and efficient handling. The others, listed " as received," will be sold with all faults (if any), and can be overhauled, if so desired, by purchasers. They will be sold as received by us, and in same condition as they finished last harvest. Farmers who have sidlings which their Elevator machines will not work can secure a Lowdown for their ridges, and thus dispense with their back deliveries; whilst others who have too much crop to cut with their own machines can secure an additional binder by way of precaution at a cost which the operations of the first harvest will repay. Machines can be inspected prior to the sale, and.the names and addresses of previous owners will be supplied to intending purchasers, in order that they may ascertain, if necessary, the reputation borne by the machine before it was repurchased by us. Second sale will be held on Saturday, the 13th instant, at the same time and place, to clear any machines wo may repurchase meanwhile or carry over from first sale. ;BUCKEYE HARVESTER COMPANY, Bond Street. "DROOF OF PURITY. EVIDENCE OF EXCELLENCE. Messrs James Buchanan and Co. have received the official appointment to supply Scotch whisky to the House of Commons, as the following attests:—" To Messrs James Buchanan and Co., 20 Bucklersbury, London, E.C. Gentlemen, —I have the pleasure to inform you that the Chairman of the Refreshment Committee, the Hon. Sidney Herbert, M.P., has instructed me to appoint you to supply Scotch whisky to this department until further notice. Enclosed please find official order for quantity at present required.— (Signed) W. Chrichton Saunders." FERNS have become very great favourites during the last few years and are becoming more so every year. Nor can we wonder at this, for they are certainly amongst the most elegant and graceful of Nature's productions. New Zealand is known in England as the " Home of Ferns," and justly so ; for, as compared with any other country, it contains a much larger proportion. There are about 3000 species and varieties of ferns all over the globe, toward which the small islands of New Zealand contribute 29 genera and 124 species; thus, small and remote from other _ lands as these islands are, one-twentieth of the ' ferns which grow all over the world are found 1 here. Britain has only 13 genera and 27 species." No plant requires less care than the ' fern—it thrives in spots where flowering plants ■would die; place them where you will and they will grow and develop their feathery forms with all their natural grace even in the presence of squalor and misery. The increasing demand for these favourite plants has induced me to erect and furnish a Fernery second to none in the colony, and I am now in a position to offer every native variety worthy of cultivation. — GEORGE MATTHEAVS, Moray Place ; and Hawthorn Hill, Mornington.

AVholesale depot, 33 Farringdon road, London.—[Advt.] Important to Parents.—Should a parent have nothing to bestow on a child but a narrow education, still he will bless you if you form his body to health and strength and activity, whether he earns his simple meal by labour at the plough, anvil, or axe. On the contrary, if you neglect his;health and streri&th, and leave him a debilitated wretch, he would curse you though a millionaire.
