THE DIRECT STEAMERS

London, January 28. The Ruahine left yesterday for Melbourne and Sydney. The Tongariro is loading for Port Chalmers and northern ports. The Duke of Sutherland sailed on Sunday for Port Chalmers.

_ The New Zealand Company's steamer Otarama is due at Port Chalmers this forenoon, she having left Lyttelton at 4.15 p.m. yesterday. The s.s. Mararoa left the tongue wharf yesterday afternoon for Melbourne, via the Bluff and _Hobart • .•'.". .

The s.s. Taieri steamed up from Port Chalmers ■yesterday morning, and landed cargo at the Rattray street wharf. The s.s. Brunner left the Rattray street wharf at 7 p.m. yesterday with passengers and cargo for the West Coast, via Timaru. The ketch Catlin cleared the lower harbour on Thursday night, and sailed in ballast for the south.

The Messageries Maritimes' new steamer Armand Behie performed a trial trip on January 13, during which the capacity of her engines was thoroughly tested. She attained a speed of 18 knots. The schooner Isabella Anderson left the Jetty street wharf yesterday forenoon with cargo for Lyttelton and Kaipara. The 3.5. Wakatipu, Captain Kennedy, from Sydney, via East Coast ports, arrived at Port Chalmers at 9.30 a.m. yesterday, and was berthed at the George street pier. She left Sydney at 4.45 p.m. on the 15th inst., arrived at Auckland at 2.30 p.m. on the 21st, and sailed again on the 22nd; called at Gisborne 23rd, Napier 24th, Wellington 25th, and left again on the 26th, reaching Lyttelton on the morning of the 27th, and sailed again at 2 p.m. on the 28th, arriving as above. From Sydney- to Wellington she experienced strong head winds, and from that^port fine weather to arrival.

The brigantine Camille is taking in ballast at the head of the graving dock. The s.s. Fifeshire, Captain Cuthbert, left the Bowen pier yesterday afternoon for London with a full cargo, consisting of 6629 bales wool, 4652 sacks grain, 109 casks tallow and pelts, 88 bags hides and bones, 969 cases cheese, 734 pkgs butter, 17 pkgs sundries, 15,207 carcases frozen mutton, and 2o case? kidneys. . Of this she took on board at Timaru,2422 bales wool, 652 sacks grain, 32 casks tallow and pelts, 22 bags hides and bones, 6 cases butter, 21 cases kidneys, and 8046 carcases mutton; at Oamaru 924 bales wool, 4000 sacks grain, 39 bags horns and bones, 6 pkgs sundries, and 1956 carcases mutton ; and at Port Chalmers 3283 bales wool, 27 bags horns and bones, 969 cases cheese, 77 casks tallow and pelts, 728 pkgs butter, 11 pkgs sundries, 4 cases kidneys, and 5205 carcases mutton.
