SCHOOL VACATIONS.

KAIKORAI SCHOOL.

The annual distribution of prizes in concetion with the Kaikorai School took place yesterday morning in the presence of a large number of the parents of the children attending the school. The school staff consists of the following teachers:—Head master, Jlr John Allardice; mistress, Jliss Jessie Black; assistants—Jlessrs AY. C. Allnutt, H. P. Kelk, J. A. M'Nickle, M.A., and R. Jloir, Jlisses J. AVilson and JI. Callender; pupil teachers—Jlessrs AA'. H. Turner, D. R. Matheson, J. Reid, Misses A. Boyd, E. J. AA'ilkinson, and E. JI. Calder. Jlr Peter Duncan (chairman of the School Committee), who distributed the prizes, said that the parents had been so liberal in giving contributions for the prize fund that it would not be necessary to ask them to subscribe for a similar purpose for two years. In referring to the work of the school, be said that attention was not only being given to general culture in the school, but also to the cultivation of a spirit of refinement amongst the scholars, and to the preservation of a good tone in connection with the school. In alluding to the gymnastic classes that were carried on at the school, he took occasion to refer to the great benefit to he derived from physical training, and urged'upon parents to encourage their children to attend the classes. He also mentioned that Jlr Stewart had started a joiners' class for boys in the district, and stated that the school committee were considerably gratified to know that boys there would now be able to learn the rudimentary work of joinery. He was sure that after the holidays were over many of the parents would take the opportunity of sending their children to Mr Stewart's class. Jlr Allardice, the head master, said he was happy to report that notwithstanding two epidemics had visited the school during the year, the attendance had been very well maintained. During the first quarter the average attendance was 683. During the second quarter—the quarter in which whooping cough prevailed in the district—it was 641. During the third quarter it was 678; and during the present quarter, when influenza had been prevalent, there had been an average attendance of 667. The number on the roll was 769, or an increase of 30 over the number at this time last year. He had every reason to be grateful to the parents for the regularity with which they sent the children to school, and he was proud to be able to report that the behaviour of the children in school and in the playground had been excellent. Mr A. C. Begg, mayor of Roslyn, in addressing the children, said that while cleverness, ability, and industry in learning were desirable and to be commended, there was one thing which was of much greater value and much more to be commended, and that was goodness, without which cleverness, ability, and industry were of very little use in life. He was therefore more pleased to hear that the conduct of the children had been good in the school and in the playground than he would be to learn that any of them had passed the Sixth Standard. He concluded by urging upon the children to be diligent in their lessons, and to strive to be good, and if they did that no one would hare reason to complain of the Kaikorai School. Jlr AVilkinson also addressed a few words to the children, to whom prizes were given as follows:— StandardA'lL—Division I—General Proficiency: Jane Brown (Jlr Kemnitz's medal).
