DEATH OF J. R. LOWELL.
[By Kleotbio Telegraph.—Oopybight,] (Pbb Pbbss Association.) Washington, August 12. The death is announced of the Hon. James Russell Lowell; aged 72.
Lowell, James Buiaell, LL.D., born at Cambridge, Massachusetts, February 22,1819. He graduated at Harvard College in 1838, and studied law, but never practised. He commenced authorship before leaving college by the publication of a class poem. A volume of miscellaneous poems, entitled "A Yew's Life." appeared in 1841; a new collection containing a '• Legend of Brittany," " Prometheus," and others in 1844; "Conversations on some of the Old Poets," containing a series of well-studied criticisms, both in prose aud verse, giving indications of Mr Lowell's interest in the various political and philanthropic questions of the day, and of hia attachment to those principles of whioh ha has since been the champion, : in 1815; a third collection of poems, and "The Vision of Sir Launfal," founded on a legend of the aearoh for the San Graal, in 1848; " A Fible for Critics," ia which he satirically pasiea in review the literati of the United States, and hia most remarkable work," The Biglow Papers," a collection of humorous poems on political subjects, • written in the Yankee dialect, in 1848. A number of other works, chiefly poems, have appeared since. In 18S5 he succeeded Longfellow as Professor of Modern Languages and Belles-Lettres In Harvard College. The degree of LL.D. was conferred upon him In 1874 by the Kngllah University of Cambridge. From 1857 to 1862 he wae editor of the " Atlantic Monthly," and he had previously been connected editorially or otherwise with " The Pioneer,"a magazine of high oharacter, the " Anti-Slavery Standard," '• Putnam's Monthly "; and from 1863 to 1872 was editor of the "North American Bevlew." He has also baen a lecturer before the Lowell Institute, in Boston, on the British poel a. In 1874 he declined the offer of Minister to Bugsia, but in 1877 he accepted that of Minister to Spain. In 1880 he was transferred to Great Britain, and held the position till the change of administration in 1885, when he returned to the Stateu His apeeoheß while Minister in London have been republiahed,—" Men of the Time."
