PARNELL DEFEATED.
The result of the election at Carlow on July 7 for a successor in Parliament to the late O'Gorman Mahon was a crushing defeat for the Parnellite candidate, in » district which Parnell admitted was his stronghold, and where he eaid if. he were defeated he would admit there was nothing left in political life for him to fall back upon. Speaking at Carlow after the election the defeated leader said he was not disheartened, but would continue his efforts in every Irish county and city. Irish Americans have come to the conclusion that the Carlow result proves Parnell has no longer any power, and that he ought to retire from public life. Duting the election Canon O'Neill, a supporter of Parnell, entered the polling booth at Baqualstown and voted but was astonished to see his own curate instructing anti-Parnellites how to vote. He vehemently protested against the curate's action, claiming it was an attempt to intimidate people. Had not the police interfered a desperate fight would have been the result. In the midst of the turmoil a man tried to strike Parnell, but wag foiled in the attempt. Farnell's followers have now lost heart, and many of them are on the point of going over to the M'Carthyites on condition that they be allowed to retain their seats at the general election. M'Carthy declines to give a pledge, on the ground that the decision'must be left to the electors.
