SPORTING.
A Timaru telegram states that at the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club a resolution was passed [asking the members for the district—Messrs Hall-Jones, Steward, and Rhodes—to take action re the proposed tax on on totalisatorß. The meeting was decidedly against it going so for, and say that in time it would stop horse raoing. They thought, however, a small tax would not bo objected to. At a committee meeting held after the annnal meeting, Mr George Dowse was re-elected handicapper. An Oamarn telegram states that at the coursing meeting Waihora won the Maiden Plate with Seacombe as runner-up. In view of the totalisator tax, the Canterbury Jockey Club have withdrawn tho programme put forward for tbe ensuing season, with the exception of the Grand National meeting,
