CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.

The following are summaries of the reports to be submitted at the meeting of the City Council this evening:—

The Gas Committee recommend with reference to clause 1 of their last report, in which it was recommended that Mr A. H. Bridger's application for extension of gas main in Duncan street be granted by laying down a 4in maiu, from Brown street to Arthur street, st a cost not to exceed £56, and referred back for further report, that Mr Bridger be allowed to obtain his supply of gas from ■ 2in main in Duncan street at a cost of about £3 10s. Mr John QrifEen, clerk at the gasworks, has been granted one month's leave of absence on account of illhealth. The town clerk and gas engineer have been instructed to furnish an exhaustive return comparing the revenue, cost of production, value, sales, &c, of the gasworks with those of other works. Accounts amounting to £1250 43 6d had been passed for payment.

The General Committee recommend that the quantity of powder allowed by license under section 213 of the bye-law to be kept by any person within the city shall not exceed the maximum stated in the Arms Act—viz,solb. Pay Bheets and accounts amounting to £24 8s have been passed for payment.

The Reserves Committee report haviDg granted the application of the Gordon Football Club to play on the Town Belt, aboTe Montecillo. Accounts Amounting to £867 3a 6d have been passed for payment.

The Finance Committee report having agreed to Mr James Morrison's proposal to pay bis arrears of rates by monthly instalments; but, failing payment, proceedings will be taken. Accounts have been passed for payment aa under:—Municipal, £954 8s 6d; water, £71 7s lOd; gas, £1050 14s 6d;—total, £2076 10s lOd. 'J?he Water Supply Committee recommend with reference to the claim of the Perpetual Trustees, Estate, and Agency Company for payment of rent for the portion of Mrs A. Mitchell's property, Water of Leitb Valley, through which the low level supply pipes are laid, and with reference to the company's offer to lease to the council Mrs Mitchell's property and the right to lay pipes through as at present for a teem of 10 years at an annual rental of £8. that the council offer to pay £5 per annum for the said right, renewable from year to year. They also recommend that three patent pipecutters be obtained for cutting the water meters, at a cost not exceeding £20. It is considered that the use of the cutters will effect a great saving in time and material, either for making connections or repairing bursts. The committee are uot in a position to report with reference to the matter of a public roadway to the northern reservoir.

The Publio Works Committee recommend that the channel in young road, off Heriot row, bo improved by laying temporarily some of the pitchers in store, at a cost of £3; that crossings of metal and screenings be laid down across^ Cumberland street, at DundHS aud St. David streets, at a cost not to f xened £2; that thti application of the New Z«nland Loan and Blsrcuntilo Agency Company for formation of footpath to the end of their premises, Castle street, be granted, at a coet not to exceed 30a; that the ZJ per ceutage, amounting to £46 10s, retained for the first year, which terminated on

April 30, nnder the street-cleaning contract, be now paid to the contractor. The following tenders had been accepted:—Supplying 2000 oubio yards machine-broken road metal, G. Calder, at 2s Bd, 3a 6d, 3s 9d, 2s lOd per yard; supplying 600 cubic yards hand-broken road metal, H. Harbour, at 4a 3d (£12710 a). Accounts amounting to £162 17s have been passed for payment. ST. KILDA J3OJRODGH COUNCIL. The ordinary meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr H. Gourley), and Crs Skipwortb, Farrell, Mitchell, Allen, Gore, and Higgins. COItEESPONDENCE, John Morrell wrote asking that a footpath be formed in front of his property in M'Glashan street.—On the motion of Cr Allen, seconded by Cr Fabrell, the inspector was instructed to attend to the matter. Sergeant Morioe wrote that the police would see to the matter of the tiring of turf near the ForburyPark Company's ground.—The" letter was received. inspector's bepoet, The Inspector reported that the dayman had been engaged effecting small repairs In different parts of the borough. A break in the sandhills ftt the end of Frinoo Edward's road was reported.—The report was adopted. TOT BREACH IN THH SANDHILLS. The Mayoe said that he had gone out to the sandhills that morning In company with Mr J. P. Maitland, chairman of the Domain Board. Mr Maitland expressed his approval of the aotion that had been taken to prevent the ingress of the waters, and stated that the Domain Board wonld be quite willing to assist as far as it was able in anything that might be done towards effecting permanent repairs. la answer to the Mayor, the Clerk said that some 300 sacks were utilised in effecting the temporary repairs. The Mayoe said that the clerk could ascertain the cost of the work, and also see what wonld be the cost of erecting a clay bank across the breach. The clerk was also instructed to write to the mayors of Caversham and South Dnnedin re the advisability of holding a conference among the borough councils, and to see what was best to ba done in the matter.
