SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Kaikorai School Committee, held in the school last evening, was attended by Messrs Duncan (chairman), CarJton (secretary), Stout, Ferry, Scott, Mitchell, and Harlow. The head master reported that the average attendance for the last six weeks was:—Boys, 328; girls, 298;— total, 624 Thn roll number at the present time was: —Boys, 384; girls, 365;— total. 749. The head master further stated that owing to the prevalence of whooping cough in the district tho attendance at the school had been sensibly affected. The headmaster asked the advice of the committee as to where he was to find room for the VI aud VII Standards at the approaching examination. The question of providing further accommodation was deferred. An application from the head master for a new range was favourably considered. Mr J. C. Smith wrote aßking for the use of the Echool hail gratis for teaching gymuastics, and Messrs Carlton, Stou*, and Scott were appointed a committee to confer with Mr Smith and report at a future meeting. On tenders for the supply of fuel being opened, that of Macdonald Bros, waa accepted. A circular from the Education Board calling attention to the meetings of the Educational Institute, and advising the committee to fix the midwinter holidays so as to allow the teachers to attend the meetings, was discussed. On the motion of Mr W, A. Stout, it was resolved to fix the holidays from July 3 to July 13. The Visiting Committee reported that the school and surroundings were in excellent order. A circular, embodying resolutions from the Duuedin and Suburban School Committees' Conference, was considered, :ind after free discussion, to elicit the opinions of members, the matter was left in tha hands of the delegates appointed to represent the committee at the approaching conference. The question of tree planting in the school grounds was relegated to the Visiciug Committee to make inquiry arid report.
