THE MIDLAND RAILWAY DEVIATION.
(Peb United Pbbss Association.) OHBiSTCHnECH, Hay 15. A crowded public meeting was held in the Oddfellows' Hall to-night under the auspices of the West Coast Railway League. The mayor presided. A resolution was passed requesting the members for Canterbury, Nelson, and Westland to insist upon the Government withdrawing all opposition to the progress of the Midland railway, and at once recommending the Governor to formally assent to the proposed deviation of the line to tho eastward of Lake Brunner. Members were also requested to urge the Government to agree with the company upon sach regulations for the sale of land as will enable intending settlers to obtain particulars as to price, surveys, and some provisional title, so that settlement on the country now being opened up by the railway may not be unduly delayed, as at present. Telegrams and letters expressing sympathy were received from Dun* edin, Greytnoutb, and Nelson.
