In regard to the case of Webster v. Greenway, in which Dr Laishley raised the objection that defendant could not be served with a summons as he is in a lunatic asylum, Dr Giles, R.M., stated to-day he looked on the service of the summons as a proper one, and ruled that the case must therefore go on unless defendant could show cause why it should not. Such cause must, however, be actual substantial facts, supported by proper evidence.

Napieb, May 14. A family named Stubb3, at Clive, had a narrow escape. Water in which arsenic had been mixed for gardening purposes was used to make tea. All the family were taken dangerously ill. Fortunately the quantity of arsenic taken was so large as to cause violent vomiting, and with medical attention all are recovering. .^ The proposed amalgamation of the Farmers' Co-operation Association and Williams and Kettle has fallen through, the Utter firm refusing the conditions offered.

Wellinoton, May 14. The Stock department has had under consideration the fatality among lambs reported from Tauranga district, and has decided to send Mr M'Lean, the veterinary surgeon of the department, to Tauranga to make inquiries, and he leaves for Auckland to-morrow. The department consider that as the sheep received at Katikati from an affected district are free from any ailment, the fatality is due either to the soil at Tauranga being 60 poor as not to provide sufficient food or the presence of some poisonous plant.

At its meeting to-Dight the City Council agreed to the proposed recreation ground at Oriental Bay. In explanation of Cr Petaerick's statement that 300 men were out of work in the city, the mayor said in his opinion the unemployed were those who had flocked into Wellington in search of employment. Notwithstanding the increase of population there was sufficient work for legitimate residents.

The Appeal Court was occupied to-day hearing the special case of Te Monaroa and other Patea Natives v. the Public Trustee and Henry Turner. The purpose of the case is to test the validity of an award by the arbitrators in regard to the rental of certain lands held under the West Coast Settlement Reserves Act, an old lease having been surrendered and a new one applied for. Argument had not concluded when the court rose.

Captain Rose, local manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, left for Lyttelton to-day, en route for England. He expeots to be absent about six months.

Captain Nicol, of the barque Glenlora, which arrived recently from Dunedin, has been promoted to the command of Messrs Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's four-masted ship Hinemoa, which will shortly arrive hero from Melbourne. Oamaeu, May 14. Mr W, C. M'Donal), who has been manager of the Qatneiu branch of the National Sank for

the past 10 years, was to-day presented witli a purse of lOOdovs, and his wife with several valuable articles of jewellery. About 40 persons were present, and Mr J. H. Barr made'the presentation. Expressions of regret were mnde at tho departure of Mr M'Douall, who has won the esteem of all he has come in contact with. Mr M'Douall feelingly replied to the remarks of the gentleman who made the presentation. Mr M'Douall leaves for Dutiedin this week.
