The Port Chalmers Borough Counoll held ita meeting yesterday evening; present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr B. O. Allen), Ore M'Kenzie, Pedlow, Chick, Mitchell, Schumacher, Innes, J. Watson, eon., J. Wataon, jun., Murray, Perry. CORBESPONDBKOE. Mr D. H. Hastings, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, wrote asking information as to the amount which a rate of Id in the pound would yield.—Tha Information was ordered to be supplied. John Buokley wrote offering to rent the upper flat of tho old 11.M. Court, in its present state, at 8s per week.—The offer was aeeepted. Lieutenant Asher, h Battery N.Z.81A,, wrote asking for permission to put a Bmall glazed notice board on the Beach street front of the Town Hall.—Beferred to the Reserves Committee with power to act The secretary of the Benevolent Institution wrote asking information as to continuing relief to a widow and family.—Ordered to be supplied. Mr Chamberlain, collector of customs, wrota in reference to handing over to the council certain rooms belonging to the department in the pubHo buildings.-It was resolved that Wb Worship the Mayor make the necessary arrangements for taking possession of the rooms. BBPOHTB. Tho Finance Coramitteo recommended the payment of accounts amounting to £13 sa. The state ol tho borough fundo were reported to bet -Debit general account, £763 Is Id; credit water do, £174 12s 8d; debit, £587 8a sd; account! to pay, £43 5s ;— total, £63013s sd.—They recommended that tenders bo invited for advertising for 12 months at per inch. In reference to fixing the annual ground rent of section 203, it was recommended that 111 per annum be charged. Ths application from Mr O. Boilaie, offering to lease tho quarry known as M'Gulre's, was referred to tbiinBpector of works, and the committee advised that tenders bo called for leasing the same. -After discussion the portion of the report referring to the quarry was deleted and the remainder of the report was adopted. . : , ;

The Works Committee reported that the staff had been occupied during tha paßt fortnight claming channels in the various wards and upper roadi also laying about 25 yards of asphalting for ratepayers, finishing the footpath on the north side of Constitution street as far as material would allow. They also reported that Mr Budge had finished his contract for metal, and no extra day labour has been engaged.—The report was adopted. Or J. WATBOH, Jun., moved—"That the Works Committee have a door fitted between the sergeants' aud clerks rooms iv the old courthouse, and that the lockup be Bold."—Or M'Kekzik seconded the motion which was carried.
