THE MARITIME OFFICERS AND SHIPOWNERS.
(Per United Pbbss Association.) Wellington, July 20. There are no fresh developments of the marine officers difficulty. The steamship owners are awaiting to see what steps are taken in Australia. The owners have recently had an interview with a large number of officers, and are confident of arriving at a satisfactory settlement if left to themselves. They have Rgreed to make an increase of pay if the Officers' Association will disconnect themselves with any labour organisation, such for instance as the Maritime Council. Captain Highman, secretary of tho Officers'.Association, is strongly of opinion that members would never agree to such* a proposal. The dispute has not, as at first supposed, b?en referred to the Maritime Council, as the Union Company is a member of the Shipowners' Association of New Zealand, and of course has to be guided by it and its sanction.
