AN INSURANCE CANVASSERS' UNION

TO THE BDITOR,

Sir, —If "Union" had thought for on* moment I scarcely think he would expect life assurance offices to pay their agents for cases that are declined or deferred. Tho very fact that the medical examiner has to be paid shows that tho declining or deferring of a case is a loss to ths office, and therefore not without good cause. If the agent was to gain by it, what ia to prevent his looking up all the yin-. healthy subjects of his acquaintance, knowing beforehand that they would bo declined ? And, further, some might even stoop to defraud in the following manner:—A friend could be persuaded to give a proposal for a large amount, and then by telling the medical referea that there was consumption or 6omo such hereditary disease in his family he could be perfectly sure that the office would never ask him to pay his premium. I am a canvasser myself, but should not tbink of upholding that which might prove to bo a very unjust tax upon' tbo policyholdera. Although tho Kuights of Labour may have cause for forming unions, I do not think ths time has yet arrived for the insurance agonl:3 to follow their steps. As far as my experience goes, if a man h anything of an agent, and can send in fair average returns, ho can practically dictate hia own terma, provided they ara withiu reason, and has no cause for complaint, Hoping I hava not trespassed too far on your valuable space,—l am, &c, July 14, A Cahvasseb,
