RAILWAY SURFACEMEN.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —In the Times of Saturday I can haroly allow tho false states of " Farmer " to pass unob- ; served, as " One Who Knows " can prove every i statement in his letter to be facts. " Farmer " I certainly does not know what he is writing ■ about, or surely he would never have committed himself in the manner he has done. But as " Farmer " seems to envy the surfacemen's billet so much, I would suggest that he should take a trial of walking the length surfacemen have to— which is five miles, not four, as stated by him— for one week these wet mornings; and I doubt very much if surfacemen's billets would stand so high in his estimation at the week's end. As for "Farmer's" insinuating remarks about free house, tic,, he had been better if he had kept them to himself, as the surfacemen simply want justice, which they would not be likely to get at his hands, if he could prevent it. " Farmer " also says there is time snd trolly allowed for the looking over the lengths. There he is also mistaken, as I know for a fact neither time nor trolly is allowed. But as "Farmer" seems to envy surfacemen's billets so much, if his age does not exceed 45 years, the commissioners are at present taking on cadets, uuder surfacemen, at 33 63 per day, p.nd by applying he might get an appointment, and at the end of the year he might be more able to write about what surface"men'g duties are.—l am, &c, July 14. Oke Who Knows,
