REFUSING AFFILIATION.
(Becelved July 18, at 13.25 p.m.) The local trades and labour councils have refused the application of the Australasian Society Of Engineers for affiliation, On account of the action taken by the Shearers' Union to prevant the shipment of Wool shorn by non-union labour, the pastoralists nnd wool brokers fire taking steps to form a union, ROPE AND TWINE EMPLOYES' UNION. A meeting of employes in rope and twine works was held; in Nanroann's Hall, at South Dunedin, last night, and was attended by a fair number of men and boys. Mr W. Barnett was Voted to the chiir; Messrs Hedrick and Warner v^ere in attendances to asaist.the meoting; ■ Mr Hkdrick explained that, in the unavoidable absence of Mr Maxwell, he had been asked by that gentleman to attend the meeting to help them with the rales. After the draft rule 3 had been read, the Chaihman invitod discussion. The tale dealing with overtime was amended to the effect that overtimo for the first two hours be paid for at the rate of time and a-quarter, and after that time and a-half. The rule dealing with the question of the employment of youths and wages was referred back to tho committee for reconsideration. All the other rules were then unanimously adopted. It was decided to call the union the New Zaaland Rope and Twine Employes' Union. On nominations for officers being taken, tha following were unanimously elected :—President, Mr John Matthews; vicepresident, Mr T. Barnett; treasurer, Mr J. Robertson; seoretary, Mr A. Lang; committee—Messrs Gilmott, Atkinson, M'Grath, Williams, M'lntyre, and Davey. After passing votes of thanks to Messrs Hedrick and Warner and the press, the meeting terminated. It is reported at Branner that tho Miners' Executive will recommend a deduction of 2d per ton at the Bruno erton mines, and slightly more at the Coalpit Huathin the hope of this satisfying the demands of the proprietors, who can effect reductions in other directions.
