DRAUGHTS CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT.

A draughts tournament to decide the championship of Australasia and tho South Seas was commenced at Dunedin on tne January 22, and was concluded on January 28. Mr IVurnock represented New South Wales, Mr Reid South Australia, Mr Gray and Mr Smith Victoria; the other players beiug New Zealauders, mostly Otago men. Mr Vt arnock (who it may be mentioned is a native of Otago) took the first prize of £25; Mr Boreham being second, Mr Brodie third, Mr Hutton fourth, and Mr Reid fifth. Mr C. R. Carter, of Wellington, has presented the N.Z. Institute with n collection of 557 volumes on or relating to New Zealand. They are valued :\t £300, one book alone having cost £20 Accompanying the gift is a collection of arms I'iifhercd on the battle fk'ldß of the Francos German war.
