EXHIBITION ART ONION.

TO THE EDITOH. Sib, —I presume it is the privilege of every citizen who has taken an interest in the exhibition to throw out a hint which he thinks may benefit his fellows, and with your kind permission I shall attempt the task. In the first place then let me remind readers of the proposed art union, and the great number of pictures to be distributed as prizes. Would it not be well for all concerned if prize winners had the option of selecting their own pictures rather than that the Fine Arts Committee should allocate them. Suppose, for instance, the writer is fortunate enough to get a ticket carrying a nnmber entitling him 'to a prize valued at £5, what should prevent him taking a pioture valued at £10 and paying the difference if so disposed? By this plan I reckon reasonable satisfaction is guaranteed to the lucky individuals, whoever they may bo; whereas if the committee alone are to say you must take this or that, as the case may be, it is obvious many will be disappointed because the picture won is not in keeping with their taste. Indeed, my impression is that the idea might he extended in the direction—namely, every winner to go when he pleased with his voucher in his hand and purchase any picture on sale he thought fit without being confined to the pictures hanging in the art gallery attached to the exhibition. Perhaps the point aimed at in this epistle is rather wide of the mark, but among so many subscribers it follows that others will not hesitate to write, giving more valuable suggestions.—l am, &c, Dunedin, September 25.
