MINING.

NOTES FKOM NBNTHOBIf. (From Oun Special Heporteb.)

NHNTHORf, September 10. Good proapect9 are continually engaging the attention of outsiders as well as local residents. Amongst these the stone nowraising from THE CROiSUS COMPANY takes the first rank, aud what is more is that the reef ia widening to such an extent that the present crushing power at command of the company cannot overtake the quantity of stone coming to grass, so that hands have been reduced in the mine. This very reassuring fact should induce thedireotors toget about at once increasing the crushing capacity by obt living a very mueli larger nnd more powerful plant than the present one. The company hold a claim which, measured along the line of reef, is nearly a mile long, for the wholo distance of which (he reef has been proved to exist and bear gold, so that there need be no fear of the supply of stone Vhe Qladstone Company have had a trial crushing of a tou of atone, which went 3oz ldwt, thus adding another proof of the value of Neuthorn stone. The Justice party's trial crushing of one ton of stoic cave 3oz 6dwt, and although this did not come quite up to the expectations of the P"tyJt is nevertheless a very encouraging result. Besides it must be b-irne in mind that trial crushiugs of even several ton. from any mine do not by any means prove the absolute value of any !ode, and bo long as they do not fall below loz to the ton there is every reason to be satisfied, and from what ever point of view the que thin may be looked at, 3oz 6dwt is an excellent THE HOMEWARD BOUND par! v are showing some exceedingly rich Btone, and it Is" reported that the reef is widening out aud streiietheningas it goes down. The Zealandia party's shaft is now 20ft deep, and the stone fully maintains its character for richness and appearance of being permanent. This shaft, beiitw sunk some distance away from former ones, where also very rich stone was obtained, goe3 to show the regularity of the Zealandia line of reef, which averages about 2ft in width of sound quartz. The Buddy party are making good progress with their new shaft, from which Borne rich-looking stone is produced. The reef continues of a good width and shows every sign of permanence. Th- re are several other claims of which one could write in an equally hopeful strain, and generally the tone of the place is a very cheering one. The Prospectors' Company have been running their Huntington roller mill every day for the past week without a hitch, and I hear the plates look exceedingly well. It is also reported that the party intend washing up shortly. The timber for the

machine liouee is now arriving upon the groiißd, «o that it will probably be not long before this mine and the works connected with it are in a state of completeness. A story, I think I have heard it remarked, repeats itself, and the old battle of Dunedin v. local directorate iB once more btilng keenly contested. Eiperieilee w^ebeß that whenever a sufficient number of directors can be obtained at tlie site Of operations tho Interests of she shareholders are better looked after in those companies inWiiclitbo frholeimanagement is iipßn the spot, than Under a divided management. The reason is not far to seek, and Is, moreover, obvious enough to require no further elucidation;
