RIVAL MAIL ROUTES. Sydney, September 9. The Government have received a definite proposal from the Canadian Pacific Company for a mail servige from Vancouver, but the details arc not allowed to be made known. The proposal will shortly be disclosed by the Cabinet. The action of New Zealand with regard to the renewal of the San Francisco contract is watched with some interest. The renewal by New South Wales is generally approved in commercial circles. SICKNESS AT SUDEST. B'.jsbane, September 10. (Received 'September 11, at 1.20 a.m.) Fearful reports are coming to hand of sickness at the Sudest goldiields, in New Guinea. FEDERAL DEFENCE. The Premier is endeavouring to promote a conference of the military officers of the different colonies to meet Major-general Edwards and discuss the question of the united organisation of colonial forces.
