THE JANET RAMSAY CASE,

TO THE EDITOK, Sib,—Seeing a friend of mine who bad the misfortune to bo one of the crew of the Janet Ramsay on her last trip, he told me that their case is not really settled yet, though it is 33 days since the vessel arrived in port, and their ease was tried iv court last Monday week. It appears to take the Government a terrible long time to settle a paltry thing of this kind. But all that I speak to on the subject declares it very unfair to keep a lot of men lingering and idliu« about the town so loug iustead of settling tbeir | case out of hand one way or another, bo that ; the men may look for employment here or elsewhere. Surely the men havo been unfortunate enough this last seven months without anything being added to make it worse. By all accounts the men, or most of them, are running into debt without beiDg able to go away and earn tbeir living. Hoping, for their sates, that it will be speedily settled.—l remain, &c, July 25. Arthur Comrib.

Moat of the men employed at tlie Winton Ment ]'ri>6ervlng Works were dUchnrgod the other day. The mannger does not intend to fcin any more mutton for the present, and rabbits are very scarce. It is Enid thatthn machinery lias been lixed for the con- < ensincof milk. In an article on New Zealand flax tlie Southland News states that recent experiments encourage the hope that it may yet bB passible to profitably occupy lnrge areas of waste and swampy land with plantations of flax obtained either from seed or by division of the roots of established plants.
