OUR RAILWAYS.
(From Oub Own Correspondent.) Wellington, July 26. The gazetted Treasury return must not be tnken as a guide to the financial results of the Government railways during the past quarter. These returns show only £250,620 receipts and £99,150 expenditure up to Juno 30, whereas the ■ lUilway department return sHows receipts £261,111, and expenditure £150,028 up to the 220 d Juae. I believe the actual receipts from the railways up to 30th June amounted in round numbers to £280.000, and the expenditure to £165,000. This leaves a net profit for' the quarter of £115,000, at at the rate of £460,000 per annum. It is noteworthy that in spite of large reductions in the expenditure in the last few years tbe working expenses are still decreasing, and are less than laat year notwithstanding tho material increase in nearly all classes of traffic, an iucrease of some £20,000 iv the receipts, and 11 more miles of railway being worked. • '
