(Pbb United Phess Associatton.) Auckland, July 26. The Trades and Labour Council has condemned the proposed quota to country districts in the Representation Bill, asserting that its effect will be to virtually disfranchise onethird of the electors of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. It also calls upon all tradesmen, labourers, and mechanics to be present at the public meeting, convened by the Mayor, to be held to-morrow evening for discussion of the question. Mr G. Holdship, managing director of the Kauri Timber Company, has left by the Mararoa for Dunedin on tho business of tbo company. Mr J. C. Firth filed a petition in bankruptcy to-day. The legal offices were closed to-day on receipt of the news of the death of Mr Justice Gillies. Tho Board of Education passed an expression of regret and sympathy with the relations. Mr Scott, manager Native football team, has accepted the offer of the Auckland Rugby Union for a match between the team and local players about the end of August. Sixty per cent, of net proceeds will be handed to Mr Scott.

Wellington, Jaly 29. Twenty-five additional petitions re Chemis has beeu received giving 6470 names. One hundred and twenty-five lists have yet to be rereturned, and it is fully expeoted that the estimate of 12,000 signatures will be exceeded. Colonel Hume, in company with Detective Kirby, was engaged this morning in making searching inquiries in Kaiwnrra and the surrounding districts with reference to the statements made as to the condemned man's innocence. This afternoon they Were continuing their investigations in town. The result of the inquiries will not be made public until after they have been considered by the Government. The Governor is not going to Christchurch.

Chbistchurch, July 26. The case of Bing, Harris, and Co. v. the Commissioner of Customs was concluded at 5 o'clock to-day, when the jury found a verdict for the Government as to white shirts and lustres, and for the plaintiffs as to the fur trimmings and belts and bags. The question of costs stands over for argument.
