MEETINGS AND ENTERTAINMENTS.
The lecond smoke concert—one of a series of winter ' entertainments organised by tho Otago High Sohool ] Old Boys' Club-was hold In St. Matthe«s'Schoolroom on Wednesday evening. About 70 members i were present, and in the absence of the president Mr Brent, one of the vice-presidents, ocoupled the ' chair. A programme to which etveral members of the ] Blub contributed was gone through. In the unavoidsble absence of the olub accompanist (Mr Bayley) ' Messrs West, Ooi, and Thomson acted, and Messrs ' Montgomery, Spedding, Jooi, Grant, Oarvosso I Bowler, and Bum sang; Messrs Siedeberg and Cox ;ave pianofortesolos, llr Milne contributed a humor- fi "i! J^lll' *nd ¥' M"rtln gained great applause ' with his banjo soloi. Tho president (Dr Belcher) c irrlving late, gave an address at the end of tho pro;ramme, and alluded to the annual dinner of the slub, to take plnoe on Saturday, August 3. The r neeting broke up at 10.30, after having spent a very jnjoyable evening. 9 The usual weekly meeting of tho Anderson's Day } Mutual Improvement Society, held on Wednesday : ivenlug last, proved to be one of the most successful hey have had this sessiou. Over 200 people assem- ' >led in the sohoolhouse to listen to an entertain- ° nent styled "The Oent's Attempt." The pro- " jramme, which consisted of songs, reoltattons So ' ras given entirely by gentlemen, the only part aken by the ladles being that of listeners, Sones md duets were given by Messrs W. and J. Robert- I? ion, Fielden, and James Henderson (all of whom lad to submit to encores), D. Samuel, Kapler acd '' iVilson. A "stump speech" was also given by one S! >f the members. Th» rest of the programme con- ° listing of trios, quartettes, readings, recitations, and lialogues, was well rendered by various members of p ihe soolety. Mr A. Begg presided at the piano, and lontributed greatly to the enjoyment of the even- n ng. The chair was oocupied by the Rev. A. Came- n on, president of the society. The programme p ssued for the occasion wns a decided novelty it 8 wing printed on coarse brown paper, and having " •arlous humorous items interspersed among the eading matter. v About £8 was collcoted last week at Oloramlka to lurcliaßO poisoned grain for tho small birds.
