DREDGING CLAIMS.
TO THE EDITOB Sib, —Now that so many claims on the Shotover river ere being offered to the public it may be well to offer a word of Caution. While dotibtless they are all immensly rich ( it does not follow that a dredjjo will work themj and as a matter of fact thete are not many places on the whole river where a dredge could win the gold or bs placed with safety. The greater part Of the river rushes through deep rocky gorges, with cliffs 200 ft to St)oft, high, and almost perpendicular. As far as I aril aware, there are only two or three places suitable for, dredging—that is, with low banks afid false of sand£ bcttom. The first is at the mouth and for two oi two and a-half miles up. Then comes Sew Hoy's Big Beash claim. You do not, as far as I remember, meet with ncother for 25 miles, until you come to the sandhills. There you have six or seven miles of good, open country until you come to the branohes. The whole of these farourable spots have, I understand, been taken up, and doubtless a rich harvest will be secured. —I am, fee., July 24. An Old MiSeb.
