MR TOWSEY'S CONCERTS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —I was present at tho afternoon concert on Saturday last, and am a little surprised to find your critic, in the notice of it, takes exception to one of the most enjoyable items in the programme—viz., the Mozart trio, for being " unduly " prolonged in being played as the composer wrote it, instead of being curtailed to suit the taste of a colonial audience.

Speaking for mysel? and several musical friends who were with me at the concert, I may say that we did not find the 15 minutes occupied in the performance of the trio at all too long for enjoyment, Scherek gave us music of this description at much greater length in that very successful series of concerts he gave in St. Matthew's schoolroom two years ago. Ho certainly at the earlier concerts, informed the audience that as certain items on the programme would occupy 25 or 35 minutes (as the case might be) in their performance, thire would be an interval between each movement to allow those who found high class music tiresome to make their escape without disturbing tho others. I do not know if your critio availed himself of this permission. Very few did, and no complaints were heard of the length of the items. On the whole, perhap?, it is a greater benefit to the community to lead their taste in the direction of good music, than to adapt the music to their good or bad taste. —I am, &c, July 22. A Lovbb of Good Music.
