MINING.

NOTES FROM NENTHORN. (Fuoa Oub Owk CORiiKSMibBNt.) July 22.—Matters hate are indeed progressing since I wrote you. last, and many claims have been pegged oft during this past week or two. I will just take it upon myself to make mention of one or two of these properties only. The Eureka Extended is supposed to be upon the same line of reef as the Eurekaand Premier, but I will not say that it is or is not, bat merely cemark that it is somewhere about two miles distant from the latter well-known claims. Between the Eureka and Premier and the Eureka Extended another claim has been pegged off, which is called the Rose end Shamrock, and if it is a certainty that the Eureka and Premier line of reef exists in the Eureka Extended, it is indeed a matter of certainty that it must exist in the Rose and Shamrock. To the south of and adjoining the Eureka Company's properties, a claim called the Mount Ida has been pegged off. West of this latter claim, and on a distinctly separate line of reef, there have beea about five licensed holdings of 30 acres each pegged off. The lins of reef that those claims are pegged upon is supposed to ba the well-known Gladstone line, which got its name because of the fact of the Gladstone being the first claim taken up on it. And now amongst the good ones on this line of reef may be mentioned the Parnell and Home Rule claims. The Gladstone claim itself is considered to be about as good a property as there is on the field, and it is a pity that the present owners could oot see their way clear to send a ton or two of stone to Dunedin for a trial crushing, as it . would undoubtedly compare favourably with any that has been sent there, if I may have the privilege of excepting the Eureka stone, which went IGoz to the ton of ore. 1 have heard that some claims have been pegged off upon the Golden Crystal line of reef, and it ia said that the prospects are of a ■very promising nature, though I have not seen the claims yet to give any personal opinion of what they are, or what they are not. It is reported here that a very fair reef has T>een discovered about 24 miles to the eastward of the township, I have seen some stone that was taken from the lode, and itßbowed gold distinctly, and when crushed id a mortar some .splendid prospects were obfoined. There is great energy displayed by our prosipectors within the last week or two, and tbongh *!i the finds that have been made recently may not be up to the mark, still a few are undoubtedly good. TheZealandia shaft is now down to a depth ol 32ft, and very good prospects can be got from the stone. The Break o"Day Company should soon be an established fact, and I have no hesitation in saying that the company's prospects are very good. The Crcesus mine i 3 looking splendid, the lode being an average width of 3ft all through the stopings, and gold being plainly visible in a ■deal of the stone. The battery in connection vr\ih this mine will be ready for work in the course of a week or so, and as there is any amount of water in the creek just now, Mr Christensen, the battery manager, intends to make a start as soon as he gets the piping put on. The Blue Slate party have bagged about 4 tons of stone, which is to be sent to the Huntington crusher, at Dunedin,- for a trial crushing. The Daddy party have also bagged some stone for the same purpose. M'Millan, the prospector, has sold all his interest in both the Blue Slate sad Golden Crystal claims. Business is very brisk hero, and new buildings are going up fast and furious. Mr Moloney's Reefers' Anna Hotel is fast approaching completion. j
