CAVERSHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual forttilgi;tly meeting of the Caversham Borough Council was fctild last evening, and waa attended by the mayor <ifi the chair), Crs Kirby, Bridgman, .Young, Baverstocit, Coverlid, Lawless, Nutting, and Wilson.

Apologies were made for tho non-attendance of Crs Cole aud Frye.

■Three storekeepers at St. Olair wrote asking that steps might be taken to prevent people with vehicles from occupying public thoroughfares at St. Glair and selling refreshments there.—Received; the police to be communicated with on the matter. Mr John M'lndoe wrote drawing attention to the chocked condition of the Macaudrew road drain.— Iteferred to the inspector, with power to act.

A letter was received from the City Corporation gas office stating that the council's committee who visited the gasworks did not find the nuisance there ■which had been alleged to exist, and further stated that no nuisance should be allowed to exist in tho future.—deceived.

The president of the Boclal purity work in connec- I tion with the Women's Christian Temperance Union wrote complaining of the indecency which was prevalent at tho St. Clair baths on Boxing Day, and asked that the council would take steps in the matter.—Received; the matter to receive tho eonflideratiosof the council. EEPOBTS. The Finance Committee reported that they had paid £iS 163 5d on various accounts ; that the sum of £2(59 Is Id had been paid into the bank ; and recommended that £12 3a 2d fGr general accounts, £20 10s Id for the St. Clair relief v/orks account, anil £110 3s Od for tho water supply account be passed for payment. That Reid and Maxwell's tender for the supply of dog collars at 4d to 9Jd each had been accepted.—Adopted.

The Works and Baths Committee reported having instructed the inspector to erect a fence across the road leading to the oecond beach at St. Clair, to prevent horses cutting up the road; that they bad resolved to meet on '.Thursday evenings in future ; that they had postponed the consideration of the queition of water channels in College street until next meeting. They recommended thet that portion of the Main South road footpath from road to the city boundary tarred and sanded, and that they would report on tho othor portion of the footpath at nexC meeting.—Adopted. The Drainage and Water Committee reported that with regard to Win. Lloyd's letter they were of opinion that the council had no power to deal with the questiun of the nuisance caused by geese on tho roads until legislation had been made on the matter. *Chey recommended that the water supply be exbended about saven chains on the Corstorphins road. They recommended that Mr S. J. Loring's request for a stand pipe for garden and Bra purposes be granted on the usual condition of £1 per annum. They recommended that Cr Coverlid be appointed to confer with the Mayor of South Dunedin with reference to the removal of nightsoil from the borough.—lt was decided to add the names of Cr Nutting and the mayor to set with Cr Coverlid, and tlia report was then adopted, MOTIONS. Cr Nutting moved and Cr Yotrifs seconded— " That the inspector be instructed to erect a fence acro3s the road overlooking St. Clair Baths, to prevent horses and vehicles damaging the newlyformed road to the second beach, such fence to be erected opposite the refreshment roomj at St. Clair." Carried.

Cr Bavkrstock moved and Cr Nutting seconded —" That this council e^ect a picket fence <]§fc high, length about two chains, on tho road overlooking the St. Clair Baths."— Carried.

NOTICE OF MOTIOtf. Cr Kirdv gave notice of motion that the mayor's salary be £06 for the ensuing year.
